Battle of Kinsale

1601 was a pivotal year in Ireland
The battle in the coastal town of Kinsale
determined the fate of the island and her people to this day.

Combatants

The main combatants in the battle were the Gaelic Irish forces, led by Hugh O'Neill and Red Hugh O'Donnell, and the English forces, led by Lord Mountjoy. There was also a Spanish force, led by Don Juan del Águila, which had come to Ireland in support of the Gaelic Irish.

Commonly known as Wood Kerns, these forces were dressed in very light outfits.

Usually much more casually uniformed than expected, the English forces comprised a formidable force.

The Spanish forces occupied the town of Kinsale and did not have a heavy involvement in the Battle.
Gallowglass

Gallowglasses

These were soldiers for hire and had spent generations in Ireland fighting for those who could pay the best.

Hugh O Neill

A prominent Gaelic Irish leader who led the Nine Years' War against English rule, renowned for his military prowess and strategic brilliance.

Don Juan del Águila

A seasoned Spanish general dispatched by King Philip III to aid the Gaelic Irish cause, recognized for his military experience and leadership skills.

Red Hugh O'Donnell

A charismatic Gaelic Irish chieftain who joined forces with Hugh O'Neill to combat English rule, known for his daring raids and unwavering resistance.

Charles Blount, Lord Mountjoy

A skilled English commander who led the English forces to victory at Kinsale, credited with his strategic acumen and effective use of artillery.

Kinsale Walls

Kinsale was originally a walled town which were erected in the late 1300's and remained as a line of defense against the native Irish until their eventual neglect and dismantling in the late 1600's

Cork Street

Originally Cork Gate, this was the most built out section of the town walls with a tower housing accomodation and occasionally a prison.

World's End

As far as Kinsale residents were concerned, anything outside this Western gate was the end of the world so the moniker stuck.

Blind Gate

This gate had a lot of smuggling and difficult interactions between the town English and the native Irish exiled outside. The gate was eventually sealed hence the "Blind" moniker. A channel down the middle of the road carried the waste from each house.

Pier Road

Old Queens Castle was the original structure that was where a swimming pool now sits. The town shorefront has been gradually reclaimed over the intervening centuries. The Spanish Cross of Burgundy flies over the town as the Spanish occupied it during the Siege of Kinsale.
